I really think your cats will be fine. Cats are extremely agile. My cat has no problem getting over ours down the stairs, and he is a fattie! :)

they should be able to jump over it. We had a tiny kitten and when he wasnt able to jump we cut a small hole in the corner of the plastic so he could just walk through it.

http://www.improvementscatalog.com/home/…
amazing product! We had to get one for our dog....would eat the cat litter "treats" YUCK!
You can find them at petco too. I just don't see it on their website. But in store they have it. Also check any local pet stores. Not sure where you live.
Best of luck and congrats on twins!

What I did was put the gate slightly off the ground just barely high enough that the cats can get under, this obviously only really works with screw on gates but that's all you are supposed to use at the top of stairs anyway.
But you really have to be sure that your baby isn't able to get their head stuck under the gate.
