What Age Typically Do You Not Need Baby Gates For Stairs?
I’m just wondering. We’ll be using them for awhile longer since our son is only 13.5 months old…but I was wondering at what age do you not need them?
I mean last week my husband slipped and fell down the top part of our steps…and they are carpeted lol Only his pride was hurt btw.
So what is a good age?
The child should be aware of the stairs at about age two. But I would keep them up until I could accompany him up and down to be certain he could hold onto the railings properly or scoot up and down without slipping. If he runs a lot, I would leave them up until I was certain he is aware that he is near the stairs and stops running before he is too close to them. Each child is different. Right now my little 2 yr old nephew can manage the open stairs in his home just fine. But his cousin of the same age can’t. Watch him and make your decision from that.
I think it depends on the child and how well they do with the stairs. My son was fine around stairs at the age of 3. But my daughter is 4 1/2 and still has problems walking up and down stairs without help. I would say from most kids I have seen 3 should be good but I would also observe your child and see if they can do it without falling all the time.
We had our kids going up and down the stairs by a year old. We started them off going down on their tummies. I see a lot of ‘3 yr old’ answers on here. By three my daughter was climbing over the gates which is even more dangerous on stairs than if you just take literally a day to show them how to go down on their tummy at a year old.
I would say that at almost 14 months old you could show him to go down the stairs on his belly and remove the gates. I have heard over the years that once your baby begins to climb, the gates become a danger. I could imagine that goes double if it is on a case of stairs.
Our sons were about 10 months old when we taught them to go up and down the stairs. I have never liked gated steps because then the adults run the risk of falling down them… we gated our hallways leading to our stairs and when he crawled up them the first couple times we knew he needed to learn to go down.. so we showed him and practiced with him going down on his belly. We called it ‘playing mountain goat’ lol, because he would go up and down up and down. By 11 months he had them mastered. Then we shut all the doors upstairs and after about a week he lost interest because there was nothing to do up there, lol.
The best thing to do is to show your lil one how to go down so that he can go down safely. You probably don’t need the gates now.
Hope this helped!!! =)
Without doing any research, I’d say 4 years old. That’s how long I will keep mine.
When they start to crawl I thought that was a bad time to give them access to the stairs lol. Before they can crawl they can’t really fall down the stairs lol.
Ouch, I know how he felt – I fell down our stairs last month – bruised my but. My son is 3 and we no longer use a gate. Once you feel that he is walking steady down the stairs is when you no longer need them.
When they can walk up and down stairs unassisted.
I say 2 or 3 years old.
The first answer-er is wrong. Crawling age is the most dangerous time for kids to be around stairs.
I would say between 3 and 4 years old. By then he should be able to go up and down the stairs without assistance.
around 3 sounds about right, they are usually pretty sure footed by then.. But I would always keep an eye around stairs.
We got rid of them at 3 for my brother. That is what we plan to do for my son too.
about 3 years old.
As soon as they start crawling. It’s dangerous even if you’re grown up like your husband.lol.I think that’s a good age to get the gates.
Whenever they start to crawl would be good.
when they start crawling
